Italy is the country where this argument is least theoretical. Historic centres operate restricted traffic zones with cameras and real fines, streets were laid out before motor vehicles, and a large goods vehicle is frequently not merely awkward but prohibited. A van is the difference between delivering to the door and carrying the load across a piazza.

Why a van

A ZTL is a legal boundary rather than a tight corner, and permits for it are commonly tied to vehicle class and size. A van has options a lorry does not. Add streets in Florence and Rome that a long vehicle cannot physically turn into, and the size of the vehicle stops being a cost question and becomes an access question.

The route

The crossing, then France, then the Alps — Mont Blanc, Fréjus or a pass, depending on conditions. A closed pass delays the load and no removals firm controls one; we say so rather than promising a timetable.

Milan and the north-west Courtyard buildings and enforced centre loading rules. The most straightforward Italian city for a van to work in.

A household move to Italy needs a customs entry and evidence that the goods are a relocation rather than an import. What follows is what is normally asked for. It is not legal, tax, customs or immigration advice.

Arriving in Italy

The two people who loaded in London are the two carrying it in. On Italian buildings that continuity matters: the plan for a particular piece on a particular stair was made by the people now executing it.

What we need in advance is specific. The ZTL position and the permit arrangement. The street width. The door head height as well as its width. Whether there is a lift and what fits in it. Whether a balcony route exists, because in Italy it sometimes genuinely is the answer.

And where a piece will not enter at all, we say so in London. Finding out in Florence with the street closing at six is the outcome a survey exists to prevent.
